This M4A1 is a war memorial at Dompaire. It is named “CORSE” but commemorates “Norvan” of the 2ème Esc. of the 12ème RCA which was destroyed at Dompaire on 12 September 1944. It has an early M34 gun mount without side protection horns, direct vision slots with appliqué armour, and dozer blade fittings. (Source: A. Fenwick, Sherman Register).
It is of interest to note that the following day a Panther was captured nearby by the Leclerc Division (2ème DB) and eventually found its way into the Saumur collection (this Panther is #172. For full details see PGT2: Panther #5).
