There is a Sherman tank memorial in York Cemetery (‘Visitation, Chapel and Reception Centre’) on Beecroft Road, Toronto. The cemetery has a ‘Veterans’ Section’ which is dedicated to Canadian and Allied veterans and their spouses.

Other Identification: “(G)E8643 D725 L0”? cast into transmission cover underside. “45” on blue/green square unit insignia painted on right of transmission cover and left hull rear. Red insignia (probably Canadian maple leaf) painted on left of transmission cover and right hull rear. “CENTRAL COMMAND” and castle insignia in red shield just visible under paintwork on right of glacis.

This Sherman is displayed on a concrete pad in a corner of the cemetery. It has a plaque fixed to the left hull side that reads:

1939     1945
THIS IS A MEMORIAL TO THE
GOVERNOR GENERAL’S HORSE GUARDS
WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN
WORLD WAR II.
“THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD, AS WE THAT ARE LEFT
GROW OLD:
AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM, NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN.
AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.”

A plaque fixed on a rock in front of the tank reads:
