PT-76A
The PT-76 Model A was developed as the Obiekt 740. It entered production in 1952. It is easily distinguished from the more common PT-76B (Obiekt 740B) as it has a distinctive multi-baffle muzzle brake. Originally armed with the D-56T gun, the tank was latterly fitted with the D-56TM, an R-113 radio and night vision equipment. The BTR-50P APC was based on the Obiekt 740 chassis.
PT-76B
The PT-76 was modified in 1958 under the designation Obiekt 740B. While the original PT-76 was designed at Chelyabinsk and manufactured at STZ in Stalingrad, the Obiekt 740B redesign was entirely carried out at the STZ plant. The most obvious change was the use of the latter series 76.2mm D-56TM gun with its conventional double baffle muzzle brake. Other modifications included the provision of a PAZ NBC system and the fitting of an R-113 radio transceiver. The tank was series produced from 1959 and is variously described as the PT-76B or “Type 2” in the West. The BTR-50PK APC was based on the PT-76B chassis.

PT-76M
The PT-76M (Obiekt 740M) was an attempt to modernise the PT-76 series. Developed at STZ in 1959 under the direction of I. V. Gavalov, the PT-76M featured a more streamlined hull with angled armour, D-56TS gun, an uprated V-6M engine developing 300hp and a PAZ NBC over-pressure system. The original PT-76M prototype is preserved at Kubinka.
