The SU-101 was developed at Uralmash in 1944 based on the T-34 chassis with many T-44 components. The design was developed as the SU-100 design was incapable of being further uprated, the long barrel was problematical in built up areas and combat experience had shown that SU-85 and SU-100 crews were very vulnerable in their forward fighting compartment. The SU-101 therefore reversed the chassis, with the engine mounted forward and the fighting compartment at the rear of the vehicle, protecting the crew behind both the frontal armor and the engine, while barrel length was no longer an issue. The tank was armed with the 100mm D-10 tank gun. Neither the SU-101, nor the related SU-102 entered series production.
