The IS-7 was actually a series of prototypes rather than a single tank design, all developed at the LKZ (Kirov) plant over the period 1945-1950. The original S-7 (Obiekt 259) developed in 1945 was armed with a 122mm D-25T gun. The later IS-7 (Obiekt 260) developed from 1946-48 was armed with a 130mm S-70 gun, while the IS-7 (Obiekt 263) developed in 1950 was a SPG variant armed with a 130mm S-70A gun.
The IS-7 preserved at Kubinka is an Obiekt 260 version of which a small series were built in 1948 for field trials at Kubinka. The tank had many novel features, including the use of remote controlled machine guns. It was well armed, had well shaped armour, especially on the spherical turret to a maximum of 210mm and weighed a massive 68.0 tonnes. It was powered by an M-50T diesel engine developing 1050hp which despite its weight gave the tank a good maximum speed of 59km/hour and a range of 300km.
