Tanks Previously Here:

The later models of Sherman tank were significantly heavier than previous ones and their cross-country performance started to suffer. The original Sherman design used vertical-volute spring suspension (VVSS) little improved over that used in the earlier M3 tank. A new design of suspension was therefore soon introduced. This was known as horizontal-volute spring suspension or ‘HVSS’ and was much improved, both in terms of efficiency and ease of maintenance. HVSS was fitted to late-production M4, M4A1 and M4A3 models.
