The former Soviet Union exported T-54 tank to China in the 1950’s as a result of which China produced its own variant from 1963 under the designation T-59. The early production T-59’s were almost identical to the T-54 but without gun stabilisation or IR equipment. Latterly the T-59 underwent the same upgrades as the Russian T-54, with muzzle brakes, gun stabilisation and laser ragefinder equipment being added over time. The T-59 is almost identical to the T-54. The commander and loader both have cupolas on the T-59, which also has a prominent weld seam across the lower portion of the glacis plate. Late production T-59’s are designated T-59-I, while the T-59 fitted with the British 105mm L7 gun is designated T-59-II.
