The T-10 was developed by Zh. Ya Kotin from February 1949 under the designation Obiekt 730 heavy tank. Originally designated IS-8, the tank entered production at Chelyabinsk in 1949 and entered service with the Soviet Army in 1950. The T-10 remained in production until 1957 when it was replaced by the modernised T-10M. Other variants of the T-10 included the T-10A, fitted with the 122mm D-25TA gun with vertical stabilisation and drivers TVN-1 night vision device, the T-10B with twin axis gun stabilisation and T-10K command tank.
The early T-10 is recognised by its double baffle muzzle brake and lack of IR searchlight for the main armament. The T-10 remained in reserve storage until as late as 1993. 42km/h, 200km or 240 with additional fuel tanks.
The original T-10 had a double baffle muzzle brake. The later T-10A and T-10B had changes to the gun stabilisation and sighting systems.

T-10M

The T-10M was the later production model of the T-10 series. The T-10M was a major upgrade of the original tank design, developed jointly at Chelyabinsk under the designation Obiekt 734 and at the Leningrad Kirov Plant (LKZ) under the designation Obiekt 272. The main distinguishing feature of the tank is the use of a 122mm M-62-T2 gun with its multi-baffle muzzle brake, IR night vision equipment and machine guns up-rated to 14.5mm. The T-10M was produced at both plants from 1957 until 1966 and remained in service with the Russian Army until 1993. The T-10M was the last series produced Russian heavy tank.
