The Obiekt 279 must rank as one of the strangest tanks ever produced. It was a particularly strange looking tank, developed in 1957 to test the survivability of tanks on the nuclear battlefield including the blast waves resulting from atomic explosions. Armament consisted of an M-62-T2 tank gun, with twin axis stabilisation, as also mounted on the T-10M and Obiekt 770 and experimentally fitted on the SU-122-54.
The Obiekt 279 had a central armoured core with sheet steel extensions, which significantly altered the external appearance of the tank. The turret was similar to that used on the T-10M. The Obiekt 279 was mounted on four sets of tracks to maintain the lowest possible centre of gravity and was powered by a diesel engine developing 1000hp.
