The 2S5 was developed in 1979 based on the chassis of the SU-100P, on which chassis the 2S3 was also built. The 2S5 mounts an AFV version of the towed 152mm 2A36 gun, fitted with a multi-baffle muzzle brake on an open mount at the rear of an armoured chassis. The 2S5 has a firing range of 28.4km, which can beextended to 40km with rocket assisted projectiles. The vehicle has, like the 2S3, a good road speed of 63km/hour and a range of over 500km. The 2S5 is known in Russian Army service as the 2S5 Giatsinth (Hyacinth).
