The T-34 was by late 1943 becoming outclassed by new German tank designs such as the 88mm tank gun armed PzKpfw V Panther and PzKpfw VI Tiger, which were beginning to appear on the battlefield in increasing numbers. The T–34 remained a highly effective tank in mass production however and it therefore underwent an up-gunning programme. Prototypes were built with prototype 85mm guns mounted in the original M-1942 turret, but the turret was too small for the new ordnance and consequently a new three man turret was developed. The earliest T-34-85's, produced at the Krasnoye Sormovo plant (Zavod No 112) in Gorkiy from Jnauary 1944 were armed with the D-5T gun which had a distinctive machined mounting collar, of which approximately 300 were produced, and of which no preserved example has so far been found anywhere in the CIS. T-34-85's were also produced from spring 1944 at Zavod No 183 (Nizhniy Tagil) and Zavod No 174 (Omsk). The majority of T-34-85’s were armed with the 85mm ZiS-53 and ZiS-S-53 guns.
There are several variants of T-34-85 turret as the turret was produced at several foundries in addition to the tank plants.
The T-34-85 is by far the most ubiquitous tank type found on monuments throughout Russia and the CIS, with those listed representing only a percentage of the overall total. The author has often driven past T-34-85’s in small villages in the Moscow region, which were unknown to residents of Moscow with an interest in tanks, such that unfortunately a complete listing of all Russian tanks on memorials will probably never be complete.
The T-34-85 continued to be produced post-war and was modernised in 1960 and 1969, with new engines and external components such as "starfish" wheels, infra-red driving lights. As many T-34-85's began to be placed on monuments soon after this time, these tanks often hav the modernised features. The Russians do not use the designation "M" for modernised T-34-85's, using only a year designation.
A year of manufacture, description or tank plant manufacturer is usually used to describe the T-34-85, however because of the different tanks plants and turret suppliers used, together with capital rebuilds and battle damage repairs in the field, it is sometimes not possible to determine the exact origin of any tank which is today on display as a wartime memorial, particlarly from photographs.

Model 1944

The T-34-85 Model 1944 production model was produced at all three T-34-85 tank plants. It was armed with the 85mm ZiS-53 and ZiS-S-53 gun in a new turret, which had a two-piece hatch in the commander's cupola and twin rear turret ventilators. There were several turret and component suppliers for the tank, such that the overall appearance varies slightly from tank to tank. T-34-85's may be classified by tank plant and year of production, but it should be noted that Russian sources have never distinguished one T-34-85 from another, with tank plants assembling from available components.

Model 1945 (Krasnoyo Sormovo)

The T-34-85 Model 1945 as identified here is as the later turret version with split turret ventilators, which was introduced by the Krasnoye Sormovo plant in the spring of 1945. Only a few such tanks saw combat in the Western theatre, such as in Prague in 1945, though they were used in large numbers against Japanese forces before Japan's capitulation. The 1945 production model introduced at Krasnoye Sormovo is generally referred to as a post-war production T-34-85, which most production was.

T-34-85M

In 1960 and again in 1969 many T34-85’s underwent a major rebuild programme at Military District repair shops which included the fitment of new "starfish" pattern wheels similar to those used on the T-54, upgraded optics, night vision equipment and other minor changes. These major upgrades were in addition to minor modifications carried out by local workshops during the tank’s service life. The upgraded Model 1960 and 1969 (both commonly referred to as the T-34-85M) featured starfish wheels, new stowage and the provision of infra-red driving lights. The tanks were modified prior to longterm storage in the Soviet Union and export to Soviet client states. SU-100's were similarly upgraded.

Czechoslovak Manufacture

Czechoslovakia produced the T-34-85 under licence and in turn exported a considerable number of tanks, particularly to countries in the Middle East. Czech built tanks usually have webbed roadwheels and a very smooth turret compared with all variants of the Russian produced T-34-85, with a distinctive bulge in the left side.

Polish Manufacture

As with Czech built T-34-85's, Polish built tanks have typically smooth turrets compared to Russian built tanks, a distinctive turret bulge on the left side and a pistol port in the turret sides. Most also have ribber or "spiderweb" roadwheels. Upgraded vehicles are often designated T-34-85M1. Ancillary equipment usually includes smoke discharger drums above the fuel drums on the rear plate. The T 34 85M2 has a schnorkel tube on the turret side and a wading cover on the main gun and machine gun mantlets.

Yugoslav Manufacture

Yugoslavia planned its own production of the T-34-85, though only seven tanks were ever completed before relations between Russia and Tito's government soured and the planned manufacturing venture was scrapped. The Yugoslav T-34-85 is perhaps the most distinctive of all T-34-85's having an entirely new, more bullbous turret and a highly modified hull.
